Productivity tips for 2012

Just a couple of resources / ideas I’ve found useful on maximising productivity in the past couple of months.  I know we’re all busy so you could apply these ideas to be more efficient.

Disclaimer:  I’m not saying that I’m brilliantly productive; I’ve just found these tools useful to allow me to be more productive than I normally am!

This is essentially an anti to do list.  We all make endless lists and fail miserably & annoyingly at completing them.  Once you’ve set up your account (takes 60 sec max / email & password) you receive an email daily from the idonethis team at a time of your choice (mine is sent at 7pm) and you simply reply to the email with the things you have achieved during that day.  These achievements can be small or big!!  I normally put a max of 3 things down (Like biking to work or a class that went particularly well).  You can then see an overview of what you have achieved over a period of time.

I have been doing this every weekday since August now & it is nice to look back & review any small achievements since then.  It’s basically like a daily, regular & personal performance management review instead of just the one you have with your boss / CTL at the end of the academic year.

2 minute rule

This idea is stolen from David Allen (not the 60s/70s Irish comedian) who authored a book called ‘Getting Things Done’.

The concept (from the author himself) = ‘I have a two-minute rule that says: If you determine an action can be done in two minutes, you actually should do it right then because it’ll take longer to organize it and review it than it would be to actually finish it the first time you notice it. This then frees up time later on that day or week to work on more important things’.

Have a productive start to 2012!!
